“Burning Eyes”
“The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.” Revelation 1:14
How long has it been since you stared into “eyes like blazing fire?” It may sound like a strange question, and yet this question is at the core of the infinite wonder of our faith, the risen Christ Jesus. There is no Christianity, without intimacy with Christ…and you can’t have intimacy without eye contact. There’s something amazing about eye contact, as it is said, “the eyes are the window of the soul.”
And yet there is absolutely something extraordinarily unique about the eyes of the King of Kings. His eyes pierce, they clean, affirm, strengthen, purify, and burn like blazing fire. When the Apostle John saw the glorified Jesus on the Island of Patmos after Jesus had raised from the dead, this sight of Jesus was so overwhelming John said “ When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.” (Rev 1:17)
It’s also tragic the life patterns we can get into as believers when we stop staring at the “eyes like blazing fire.” When we look at the sparkling allures of this world, or compare ourselves with those around us, or any other place but those blazing eyes, it is easy to slowly become far less than He intended for us to be, even purchased us to be. As the Scripture states, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” 1 Corin. 6:20)
So if this idea of staring intentionally into the eyes of Jesus by faith seems foreign, today you’re invited to lock eyes with the Source of all Wonder! Drink in the power, affirmation, love, compassion and goodness that Jesus has to offer, and intends to pour through you to others who’ve been blinded by the world’s distractions. And if in the moments those burning eyes become overwhelming, hear the kind words of Jesus to John when he feel down like a dead man: “Then he (Jesus) placed His right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Rev 1:17,18
Gaze my friends…pause and gaze at those wondrous burning eyes.
