Waiting in Silence for the Lord
“My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken. My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken. On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:1-2; 5-8)
The theme of the Psalm is expressed in verse 1. David’s soul waited in silence and found rest in God alone. God was his complete source of calmness when his world was falling apart. He emphasizes this through using the Hebrew word for “only” six times. David knew that God was the “only” source of his salvation and He was his “only” fortress. As a result, he would not be greatly shaken. David felt at ease like a warrior who is safely in an impregnable fortress. He knew that in life God was the only fortress that was safe from all enemies. He could have complete trust in God alone.
Today it seems that our world is coming unraveled. We need to rest in the safety of our God. During this Holiday season, take time to reflect on the reality that God the Father sent his Son to be our only salvation and only source of rest and safety. Our soul can rest in silence knowing that our Savior is in control and that He holds us in His hand. As God the Son came to live among us, He will give us the strength and courage to face each day and not be greatly shaken.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank You for being that safe place I can run to in the midst of life’s problems. Thank you for the sense of peace and safety you will give me through Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen.
