“The Powerful Purpose of Delight”
Occasionally, when I start a new year, I ask the Lord to give me a word that will signify what he wants me to learn in the days and months ahead, a word he wants me to focus and meditate on until it becomes a truth embedded deep in my soul.
This year the word that kept coming up over and over again is DELIGHT.
In the Bible, the word “delight” has to do with pleasure. It can mean favor, great pleasure, extreme satisfaction, or joy!
I don’t know about you, but I would like a greater dose of delight in my daily regime. We need delight to keep us from growing weary.
In the Bible, Eve delighted in the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3:6). The LORD delights in his people (Deuteronomy 28:63). And we are called to delight ourselves in the LORD (Isaiah 58:14).
Clearly delight is a powerful motivator in our lives, and it’s important that we channel it in the right direction.
So here are some verses on the subject of delight, and I pray that as we mediate on them, they would give us great pleasure, extreme satisfaction, and joy!
Psalm 1:1–2 – Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 35:27 – Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!”
Psalm 37:4 – Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 40:8 – I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
Psalm 51:6 – Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Psalm 119:14–16 – In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Proverbs 11:20 – Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are his delight.
