Statistics, Eat Your Heart Out
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!" Psalm 111:10 (ESV)
Have you ever struggled to figure something out? I fancy myself a person who enjoys solving problems. So, when my younger cousin asked me recently to help her with her college statistics homework I said, “Sure I can figure that out. I took statistics.” However, immediately after jumping into it, I realized that this was like a different language. And even after all the reading and reviewing and attempts I made at figuring it out, I still had to turn to Google for some assistance.
We have a great need for wisdom in our lives, and we shouldn't always rely on ourselves for understanding. Knowing right from wrong, discerning difficult situations, and making the right choice should not be up to us entirely. The Bible teaches that wisdom is available if we ask in James 1:5. And the start of our wisdom is our understanding of our relationship with God himself. Fearing God is the foundation of true wisdom!
Our reverence and awe of who God is calls us to both respect His being and obey His commands. As we obey God, we grow in wisdom. It's not solely about information or knowledge but it has everything to do with understanding and discernment. True wisdom comes from God alone. May we surrender what limited understanding we have today and ask for true wisdom from God who promises to give generously to all who ask!
