Philippians 2:3–4 - "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." (NKJV)

This is another verse that cuts the legs out from under the “I’m a good person” argument for why someone thinks they will get into heaven without Jesus. There are plenty of things that we do throughout our day that on the surface look like acts of goodness and seem selfless. However, if the truth be told, most of the things we do that are kind, ultimately are for selfish and self-serving reasons. Remember that God judges the heart, not simply the result of our actions. Why we do something is often more important than what we do.

We are told in this verse to do what does not come naturally at all, and that is to help and look out for others even if it does not benefit us at all, or even potentially in the future. That is what genuine love looks like, truly caring for someone else’s well-being regardless of how it may affect us. How often do you go out of your way to help someone that would have no benefit for you at all?

We are currently living in an ever-darkening world, people are more self-absorbed than ever before, and that makes anyone willing to do selfless things stand out. What a great way to witness to others by showing them the love of Christ. Actions speak louder than words. If you truly want to be a light for Christ, go show the world you mean what you believe and as a result, people will want to know what is different about you. So let’s look for ways around us to demonstrate the love of God to a hopeless and needy world. We know they need Christ, they don’t want to hear it, so let’s show it!
