As I read around this verse for context I was struck by how many truths we often recite as Christians are nestled within Romans chapter 8. I would implore you to read the entire chapter today and really take it to heart, it is a powerful chapter and one of the reasons I love the book of Romans so much. The latter part of this chapter speaks of our weakness and suffering but how God through the Spirit is our aid and comfort amidst it all. Paul then begins his conclusion with this verse, if God is for us, who can be against us?

We serve a mighty and omnipotent God, One who is all-powerful. There is an old children’s song that we used to sing in Sunday school that goes: “My God is so great, so strong, and so mighty there’s nothing my God cannot do.” I don’t know if you can think back to when you were a kid, but if you can, was there a time when you thought, there was nothing my dad couldn’t do? When we are young often our dad is our hero and protector, and in our eyes, there is nothing he can’t do. We are always safe with him. Now as we get older and become adults ourselves we quickly learn that dad is just as human as we are, but God is not.

God is our Heavenly Father and while our earthly dad may have put up a good front and could convince his young children that he can do anything, God actually can. So ask yourself this, if your God is the most powerful eternal thing in the entire universe, and He has got your back, what can possibly come against you and stand?

Now does this mean we as Christians won’t face any hardship and all of our plans will succeed perfectly? Of course not, we still face difficulties, strife, pain, and loss. But that does not mean God is not there, doesn’t care, or is too weak to help. We have to remember that His ways are not our ways, His plans are not our plans. He has a plan for your life that you may only get a glimpse of. He is molding you and shaping you through your circumstances in ways we often cannot fathom. But it is ultimately for our good, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

So in times of difficulty, pain, strife, hurt, or despair, remember that what has come against you cannot stand outside of God’s will and plan. So even when it feels like all hope is lost when the night seems the darkest, God is still there, He still cares, He is still on His throne, and is still in control. Lean on Him in the hard times, and rejoice with Him in the good times. God will get you through it!
