Wrong Things Right
Amos 5:14–15 - “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.” (ESV)
I think I’ve shared some of my challenges with road rage in the past (God’s not through with me yet.) However, I believe that some of my indignation is justified. For example, have you ever been on the freeway in stop-and-go traffic waiting patiently to exit on the off-ramp? After what feels like an eternity waiting, you’re finally getting close to exiting only to have some bright sports car come zooming up and jumping in front of you. You think to yourself, “They didn’t have to wait in line. That’s unfair. I want justice!” While that may be a silly example, the truth is we all want justice when we witness or experience a wrong… and justifiably so.
In the book of Amos, we find the shepherd farmer who witnessed his community’s most vulnerable being mistreated by people who claimed to follow God faithfully. Amos sensed God calling him to say something about it so, he confronted them about the harm they were causing. God gave him the courage to remind powerful people to seek and love goodness, hate evil, and maintain justice. God is still in the business of turning injustice upside down.
James 5 reminds us that God is coming to right wrongs, but we also have a role to play. We support local community organizations. We find creative ways to care for creation. We help make healthy food more accessible to communities that don’t have access to fresh produce. Simply put, we do what we can to love in the midst of hurt and trust that God is doing the rest. As we remember that God is at work turning wrong things right, we must also remember that each of us has a role to play.
