This was part of the message from the Lord that Nathan the prophet spoke to King David when David sinned by having Uriah the Hittite killed and taking his wife Bathsheba.

In 2 Samuel 7 the Lord tells David that He will bless his seed that will come after him and tells him that "My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul…" I love this. It is a promise that no matter what happened the Lord would be merciful to him. And the verse above proves this. No matter how hideous David's sin was regarding Uriah and Bathsheba, the Lord put away his sin and promised that he would live. Such a precious promise. He didn't get what he deserved…and when we are true followers of Jesus, neither do we.

But this verse also teaches us that sin has repercussions. Yes, we are forgiven, but the Lord's enemies are looking for reasons to blaspheme Him and our sin can give them that occasion. It reminds me of when Moses pleaded with the Lord in Exodus 32 to turn from His wrath to destroy the Israelites when they sinned and made the golden calf and worshiped and sacrificed to it. Moses said' "Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth?" Moses wanted to keep their enemies from speaking against the Lord. "So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His People."

People are watching. Praise the LORD for His mercy and forgiveness. How wonderful to know this! But as believers who sin, we need to remember…our sin can give occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme. It's a big responsibility, so remember the verse, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." (1 Peter 4:8)
