“God is Love”
1 John 4:8 - “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (NASB)
Valentine’s Day is usually a celebration for couples to show their love for one another. But how often do you think of Valentine’s Day as a day to remind us of God’s amazing love for us? A lot of single adults see Valentine’s Day as a bitter reminder of their singleness and their desire for a relationship. Thankfully, our God doesn’t leave anyone, whether single or in a relationship, out of His unending love and grace.
We wouldn’t have any concept of “love” if it weren’t for God. He defines love.
The Apostle Paul wrote a chapter in 1 Corinthians that we commonly refer to as “the love chapter”.
1 Corinthians 13:4–8a
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails;
God describes love this way, and then tells us that He is love. So that means God Himself is all of these things. God is patient and kind…keeping no record of wrongs. God always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres. God’s love is a perfect love.
We often read 1 Corinthians 13 at weddings to remind us what love should look like, but God is the perfect demonstration of it. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” He gave up His only Son for us. He gave us eternal life because of His great love for us.
And we can make it personal. He died for me. He died for you. If you were the only one on earth He would have still sent His Son for you.
So this Valentine’s Day, remember to set your sights not on earthly relationships, but on the God above who loves far more fully than we could ever imagine. God is love.
