Oceans
Matthew 28:19–20 - "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (ESV)
Marine biologist, Sylvia Earle who spent four decades at the forefront of ocean exploration, is an oceanographer who Time Magazine called "Hero of the Planet" in 1998. As a 3-year-old child, a wave sideswiped Sylvia, and instead of being scared of the power and mystery of it, she remained interested as she emerged from the water with a big smile on her face. The ocean’s depths, power, and mystery should have overwhelmed the small child, but instead, she found her purpose there and has been running back ever since.
When I first heard this story, it reminded me of what it's like to follow Jesus. Jesus can feel like an ocean that sweeps us off our feet. He can shake us up and at times it may even leave us feeling out of sorts. But when we remain curious and courageous, we soon discover that He always invites us into His love. We discover a purpose that is much more than a job or what we do. It’s a different way to be human — we are followers of Jesus who gather around Him, worship Him, and declare that God’s kingdom is close and freely available. Jesus is inviting everyone to partner with Him in changing the world.
To do this we must spend time with Jesus. Spend time in prayer, spend time in the Word, and spend time in worship. We must let go of the old. We're called to replace our former way of living with the patterns, habits, and teachings that we see in the life of Jesus. And we must talk about God's closeness with others by sharing the things that He is doing in our lives. The challenge then beloved, is to continue running back to Him today, tomorrow, and every day for the rest of our lives knowing that Jesus helps us discover purpose.
