Psalm 127:1 - "Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain." (NKJV)
The human race has done some pretty remarkable things over the centuries. We have tamed many seemingly uninhabitable parts of this world, and we’ve built great machines that have let us explore, fly, and even venture into space. It can seem at times that we as humans have no limit on what we can accomplish when we work together. Such accomplishments can lead to arrogance, the arrogance to think that we do not need God. We can handle things fine on our own.
However as Psalms reminds us, unless God is in what we are doing, ultimately, we labor in vain. Oh sure we might have success for a season, but the truth is, whatever we are working toward, even in ministry, if we try to get ahead of God, we are doomed to fail. It is for this reason that while we labor for God, we must continually seek His will. It is not enough to simply do it for God, He wants us to do it His way, and in His timing, and ultimately for His glory. You see if we succeed it is the Lord who gets the credit, not us, lest we become arrogant and think of ourselves as better than or equal with God.
The truth is for all our success we can look around and see how quickly our greatness can be cut down. In spite of all our amazing technology and engineering the forces of nature still easily roll over us. Despite our great strides in the medical field, a tiny microscopic virus can still bring our entire planet to its knees. Do we need God? As they say in Minnesota, “oh you betcha!”
I pray that for all the things we wish to accomplish for the Kingdom of Heaven, that we would remember to stop and pray and consult what the Lord would have us do. Let us wait upon the Lord for His plan, His timing, and His will, and then we will see His glory!
-Amen!
