“Wings Like Eagles”

Isaiah 40:29–31 - “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (NIV)

If you could be any animal you wanted to be, which one would you choose?

I’ve always thought it would be fun to be a dolphin.  They seem happy and playful.  Plus I love the ocean.  But if I could be any animal, I might have to go with an eagle.

In 1782, the bald eagle was chosen as the national emblem of the United States because of its majestic appearance. It is a powerful symbol of freedom and strength.

Typically eagles fly about 30 mph, but they can dive at speeds of 100mph.  They can fly 125 miles without landing, and they can glide at altitudes up to 10,000 feet!

That’s why Isaiah 40:29–31 is such an amazing promise.

God says when we feel tired, weak and weary, he is able to give us strength, so we can fly farther and faster than we ever thought possible. When we stumble and fall, he is able to pick us up and make us soar on wings like eagles. When the problems of life are dragging us down to the dust, we can climb to 10,000 feet and circle above them.  We can gain a heavenly altitude and see our circumstances with the clarity of eagle-eyes.

But that doesn’t just happen automatically.  There’s one condition here.

To renew our strength, we must hope in the Lord.  We must look to him as our only source of sufficiency. He alone gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Why?  Because he alone does not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom (verse 28).

So is anyone feeling tired today?  Or weak or weary?  Did anyone stumble and fall?  Hope in the goodness of the Lord, in his wisdom, grace and might. Hang onto this promise.  Write it down and put it on your mirror.  Slip it into your pocket and don’t forget it.

Hope in the Lord, and he will give you strength.
