Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
When I was in seminary I had an interesting side job to help me pay the bills. I worked for a company called Senior Felix and…among other things…they made what I still think is the best 7-layer dip on planet Earth!
What was interesting about my job, however, is that I sold it at Costco by setting up a display stand down the center aisle near the refrigerated section. I wore a white button up dress shirt, sleeves rolled up to my elbows, and a no-nonsense red apron showing who was the boss. I had some chips, little paper cups, and then I had the cups filled with 7-layers of pure joy all lined up along my little stand.
People would walk by and I would call out with a resounding voice, “Would you like to try the absolute best 7-layer dip you’ll ever have in your life? It’ll brighten your mood, put a smile on your face, and it all starts right here with a free sample.”
And then I’d extend my arm and offer them a cup.
If I could just get the person to try it, I was very successful at getting them to buy it. However, I noticed that no one ever bought the best 7-layer dip on planet Earth if they weren’t willing to taste it first. My demonstration, my demeanor, my presentation, and my excitement over the product helped with getting people to try it.
But what does 7-layer dip have to do with your relationship to God, you may be wondering?
Although God isn’t concerned so much about 7-layer dip, He’s so completely interested in you that He DEMONSTRATED His love toward you by sending His Son Jesus to die for you on the cross. God didn’t just like the product and then chose to demonstrate it (if you will)….God is the very product Himself!
Please know this, that God rolled up His sleeves when He sent Jesus to Earth for you. It wasn’t any mere side J.O.B. but the greatest sacrifice known in the entire universe. God demonstrated His supreme love for you in that He bled and suffered and died for you.
Imagine that.
