Advent Devotional: Day 13

Luke 22:24–27 - “And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. And He said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.’” (NASB)

Whenever more than two people gather together, a discussion will arise. In Luke 22, the disciples selfishly asked who was the greatest. Jesus stated that while the world asks such questions, it is not this way with you! Jesus goes one step further to tell them that He, Immanuel, is not there to be served but to serve.

During the holidays many things pull our attention away from Christ.  These might be: shopping for gifts, preparing baked goods, spending money on decorations, and maxing out credit cards. Remember to schedule in time to be with Christ.  Take a step further and find a place to serve in this season where no attention is drawn to you.

Prayer: Christ, empower and strengthen us to cast off the stranglehold of material things and the yoke of busyness that holds us back from drawing near to You.  Father, bring opportunities before us daily that give us the chance to be the ones who serve out of love for our neighbor.  You are the one who served us to the utmost.  Help us to reflect that. Amen.
For Reflection & Discussion:
What are the biggest things keeping you from spending time with Jesus?  What can you do to rearrange your priorities so he has first place?
