Pastor Bloopers
Psalm 103:14 - “For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.” (NASB)
God has a way of reminding me how human I am. I call them pastor-bloopers. Let me share one of many:
It had been a very long day of travel home from the Philippines. I arrived at Los Angeles Airport, exhausted and barely able to walk to the gate connecting to my flight to Fresno. I decided to freshen up and change my clothes in a nearby restroom.
As I left the private stall, I went to the sink to wash my face and hands. To my surprise, I could see in the mirror a woman opening the door of the stall next to the one I had just occupied. Yes, I was in the women’s restroom!
I decided to play dumb. I dried my hands and left the restroom; embarrassed and afraid this shocked woman was flying on the same plane to Fresno.
I must admit, I was tempted to greet her in Italian in hopes she would think I was a misguided foreigner. Instead, I boarded the plane, covered my face with a mask, and fell asleep. I was thankful she was not on that small plane.
I cannot imagine sitting next to her and facing the temptation to use my very limited Italian vocabulary. “Mi scusi Signora.” “Excuse me Madam.” “Stupido!” (No translation needed).
Given the way my day was going, I would not have been surprised if she spoke Italian and to hear her say, “Niente scuse.”—“No excuses. It’s time to ‘fess up!’ You’re an idiot!”
To err really is human…
