The Story I’ll Tell
Acts 8:35 - "Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus." (ESV)
Have you ever listened to a song and had your face get all scrunched up as you think to yourself, “Nah…This ain’t it?” I’m obviously speaking from experience when I say this may have happened to me once or twice. Sometimes it’s the beat or maybe it’s the melody. For me, most of the time, it’s because the song simply doesn’t tell a story. There’s nothing that I feel that I connect to in the song. Now I’m not sure if every song should tell a story or even has a story to tell but the great songs in my opinion, especially those that help me as I am going through something, usually tell amazing stories.
In the passage above, Phillip, a follower of Jesus, had an interaction with an Ethiopian eunuch from out of town. After listening to the eunuch’s questions about God, Phillip asks permission to expound on what the eunuch was reading and ultimately share with him who Jesus was and how He’d changed Phillip’s own life. The eunuch was blown away by Phillip’s story and decided to immediately get baptized. Just like Phillip, we have a story about how God is working in our lives, and since Jesus is at the center of it, sharing that story with someone has the potential to change their lives forever.
I’d encourage you this day to take that risk and create rhythms to share your story. However, I’d argue that sharing our story begins with listening. And not the type of listening when we’re just waiting for our turn to talk but genuine listening to those around us with the desire to know them as God does. I believe that it’s after this type of listening that we will be encouraged by the indwelling Holy Spirit to share exactly what the Lord wants to share, just as Phillip did.
